How to connect to the FTP server

Using Site Manager

In order to indicate the specific site settings and to connect to the targeted FTP site you can use Site Manager. With the help of Site Manager you can store entries and configure more parameters than the with the Quick Connect.

Navigating on the server

After you have successfully connected, you will see a list of files and directories on the right side of the main window. In the edit field on the top you can see the name of the current remote directory. Below there is the remote directory tree. Under the remote directory there the contents of the current remote directory is listed.

If you want to change the current remote directory:

You will catch sight of a directory called ".." listed in almost all directories. If you select this directory, you will go up to the parent directory of the current directory.

On directories that you haven't accessed yet you will see question marks ("?"), it means that the FileZilla Client can't tell if there are subdirectories within those directories. If you access the directory the question mark will disappear.

Directory Comparison

If you want to quickly see the differences between files on the local machine and the server, go to View > Directory Comparison, and choose either "compare file size" or "compare modification time." (Identical files will be hidden by checking that option.) Then click "Enable." You will now see color-coded differences between copies of the same file on the different machines. See their meanings here.

File-transferring

Just double-click on the file and it will start to upload or download. It will be put to the transfer queue and the transfer starts automatically. In order to transfer directories and/or multiple files, right-click the selected file. In popup menu you can click on Upload/Download.

You can also extract the files from one side and put them on the other side. Select the file and click Add to Queue on the popup menu – the files will be added to the queue, and they will be transferred later. You can also pull the files directly into the queue. Click on the button on the toolbar and the transferring will begin.

Or, you can on click the file, and then pull it to the directory where you want to move it. The directory will be highlighted when you are over it. Release the mouse button and the file will be added to the directory.
